Cowdenbeath celebrates Canon Philip Doherty

Canon Doherty

I had the great privilege of attending a Mass of Thanksgiving at Our Lady and St Bride Church Cowdenbeath for the Diamond Jubilee of Canon Philip Doherty.

I talked to many parishioners afterwards and heard first hand just how highly Canon Doherty is thought of and the massive contribution he has made to life in Cowdenbeath where he has served as parish priest for 30 years.

Canon Doherty was ordained by Archbishop Gordon Gray at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh on 2nd July 1955 after studying for the priesthood at Blairs College and then St Sulpice seminary in Paris.

A well known face to all the community in Cowdenbeath the Canon although retiring will continue to be part of life within the Town and I have since the service chatted with him and wished him well on his retirement and congratulated him on a life of service, dedication and prayer. A remarkable man and for me, a great honour to be at the service where so many parishioners were able to pay tribute to their Priest.
