Government Should Intervene in College Dispute

As college staff in Fife and across Scotland move toward further strike days, Mid Scotland and Fife MSP, Alex Rowley has called on Ministers to bring both sides together to find a solution.

The Scottish Labour Deputy Leader met with college staff in Fife and at the Scottish Parliament to hear first hand their claim for an agreement that will see equality and justice in a flat pay rate award to all college staff.

Mr Rowley said; “FE bosses agreed to move from a percentage pay award to a flat rate award but then decided to pay support workers a lower award than lecturers, defeating the purpose of the exercise and in doing so discriminating against some of the lowest paid workers in the sector. This is not good for staff moral which impacts on the provision in the college.

“FE bosses seem reluctant to move their position which means more strikes. The Education Minister must intervene to get both sides back round the table to find a solution to this unacceptable ongoing situation”.
