Today I joined with Cllr Linda Erskine and the legendary Willie Johnston at Moorside Park Dundonald to watch a brilliant afternoon of football in the Willie Johnston Village Competition organised by the Cardenden Events Group. Over 70 people took part representing local bars in the area and the winning team for the second year was the Village Inn.

A large crowd from the local community watched over 70 young people compete in the competition representing local bars across the area and resulted in a great competition with good spirit and everyone having a good time. I want to pay tribute to the local community who organised this event and are now planning the next one and the Johnny Thomson Tournament in September. As a result of their efforts hundreds of local people were able to enjoy a really good day out in sport. It was also great that the legendary Willie Johnston came along to present the winners with their trophies.

Willie played 393 games for Rangers scoring 125 goals and was capped for Scotland on 22 occasions and the tournament is in recognition of this local lad’s achievements and gives all the local teams the chance to come together for what was a great day of football and fun.
