Earth Hour: 24th March 2018 @ 8.30pm

Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Alex Rowley has shown his support for WWF’s Earth Hour campaign and urges people across the region to do the same this coming Saturday at 8.30pm by switching off their lights for one hour to raise awareness of environmental concerns and climate change.

Hundreds of millions of people around the planet take part in WWF’s Earth Hour every year. Last year around 9 million took part in the UK alone.

People do a wide range of things around the hour to show they care about our planet’s future. Millions choose to mark Earth Hour by going ‘lights out’ for 60 minutes at 8.30pm – a symbolic show of solidarity for the planet. The world’s biggest landmarks – like Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, and Edinburgh Castle – switch off lights as a visual display of their commitment too.

WWF Earth Hour 2018 is asking people to make a Promise For The Planet by making a simple change to their everyday life that will help protect our planet. This could be anything from refusing plastic cutlery with take-away food, using keep-cups or composting food and garden waste.

Speaking about the campaign, the Labour MSP said:

“Climate change is one of the biggest concerns we face as a society. Our planet is at risk of an environmental catastrophe unless we make a change now.

“1 in 6 species are in danger of extinction due to climate change, and we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to protect the planet we live on.

“Over the last 25-30 years 80% of freshwater species have declined, over 50% of populations of land species have declined, and 40% of our forests have disappeared to agricultural land

“I will be taking part in Earth Hour this year and I urge people across the region to do the same. We must do all we can to protect our planet.”
