Mossmorran Petrochemical Blues

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency have served petrochemical companies ExxonMobil Chemical Ltd and Shell UK Limited with Final Warning letters following an enhanced unplanned flaring event at the Mossmorran complex in Fife, during June 2017.

In addition to Final Warning letters, SEPA commissioned a full review of the environmental permits to operate both sites, with a view to strengthening environmental compliance and reducing the impact of flaring on local communities.

People are concerned, they are worried, and they have a right to be worried. I have written to the Cabinet Secretary and asked her to order an independent review of the plant. We need to know if the plant is still fit for purpose after all these years, especially given the large number of unplanned flaring events.

I am also calling for air quality monitoring in every community around the plant.

I have cross-party support for a debate in parliament, and I am currently waiting for a time-slot to have that debate.
