Scottish Labour has launched a five point action plan to crackdown on anti-social behaviour in communities.
The action plan was produced following a series of consultation events in communities across Scotland where Shadow Ministers listened to the concerns of people locally.
The five point plan was unveiled as Scottish Labour released figures estimating that as many as half a mil
lion antisocial behaviour complaints went unreported last year – equivalent to 1,538.
Scottish Labour Leader, Iain Gray MSP, said: “Scottish Labour has been out in communities across the country listening to ordinary Scots. Time and time again people are telling is that they are sick to the back teeth of antisocial behaviour, but don’t bother reporting it because they don’t think anything will get done. That needs to change.
“That’s why Scottish Labour has come forward with a tough five point action plan to crackdown on antisocial behaviour that continues to make the lives of too many hardworking Scots a misery.
“Our plan offers a package of simple, practical steps that we believe will not only give more power to local communities, improve how antisocial behaviour is dealt with, but will speed up the process too so communities get the relief they deserve quicker. The sad reality is that for the last four years the SNP have had their fingers in their ears - ignoring what communities have been telling them. Labour always stands firm on the side of the law abiding majority and would urge anybody suffering from antisocial behaviour to report it. Nobody who wreaks havoc in our communities should go unpunished.
“This is the real choice in this election. A Labour Government focused on what matters and committed to tackling the issues that effect Scots everyday lives like antisocial behaviour, or the Nationalists distracted by separation and leaving hardworking people to shoulder the brunt of swingeing Tory cuts.”
Antisocial Behaviour Action Plan:
1. Get ASBOs back on track. Allow community councils and residents’ groups to get ‘fast track’ ASBOs.
2. Crack down on problem neighbours. Let housing associations and councils impose behaviour contracts to stop nuisance neighbours.
3. Force landlords to act on antisocial residents. Make private landlords act on complaints, not wait for formal notices.
4. Reclaim public parks. Tough action to crack down on trouble in Scotland’s public parks.
5. Drink banning orders. Curbing alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour in problem cases.
